Part of Surrey and lying on the River Thames, Chertsey is easily accessible via J11 of the M25, making it a convenient location for coach hire. Central London is around 18 miles away so it has the benefit of being close to the capital while still attractively urban.
Chertsey is one of the oldest market towns in Britain and there are a number of landmarks and sights which point to its long history. St Peter’s Church dates back to the 13th century and is surrounded by listed buildings. There is a museum with free entry on Windsor Street where you can find out more about Chertsey in days gone by.
One of the biggest attractions in the area is the popular theme park, Thorpe Park. Originally opening in 1979 after extensive development, it has expanded over the years and now has many rides and attractions including roller coasters, themed areas and water rides.
If you enjoy the outdoors life, there is no shortage of green spaces within Chertsey. If you want to walk by the river, Chertsey Meads is the place to go. Flood meadows extending over 170 acres provide a beautiful landscape. St Ann’s Hill is a vantage point which features a nature trail and a stunning panorama, while Homewood Park provides views over the Palladian Botley Mansions.
For boat lovers, Penton Hook Marina is located in 80 acres of disused gravel pits and is the biggest inland marina in the UK. It leads to Penton Hook Island, a conservation area which can be traversed via footpaths and trails. The island offers great views of squirrels, birds and other local wildlife.
There’s no shortage of retailers in Chertsey, especially around the Windsor Street area and it includes a number of independent shops. For shopping on a bigger scale, head over to nearby Staines and you’ll find Elmsleigh Shopping Centre.
